Women's Fund Awards $20,000 in Grants for 2009
On Wednesday, November 11, 2009 The Women’s Fund celebrated National
Philanthropy Day and Community Foundation Week with a lunch and special program at The Westbrook Country Club.
The Advisory Committee of The Women’s Fund, chaired by Ivy Amos, sponsored the luncheon to present grant awards to 10 public charities. Grants are awarded each year through a competitive process to support programs and projects for women and girls in Richland County.
Grants for 2009 were awarded to the following organizations:
Catholic Charities A Financial Toolkit for Women – Grant dollars supports a
day-long educational workshop dedicated to teaching women sound financial principles.
Center for Individual and Family Services The Women's Group – Program provides an opportunity for participants suffering from mental illness to try new activities, learn new skills, and meet a variety of people through exposure to various cultural and civic programs.
Center for Individual and Family Services Ladies in Recovery – Program addresses addiction and mental health issues. Emphasis is placed on empowerment, self-esteem, rebuilding personal identity, and identifying relapse triggers in alcohol/drug use and mental health.
Domestic Violence Shelter Choose Your Partner Carefully – Program is collaboration between The Shelter and Children Services to educate teenage girls, women, and mothers about the importance of partner choices.
Hospice of North Central Ohio Healing Journey Retreat – Grant dollars helped support an overnight retreat for women who have suffered the loss of their spouse or significant other within the last two years.
Kids' Connection of Ohio, Inc. Heart of the Matter – Based on a curriculum endorsed by the U.S. Juvenile Justice Department, moms/caregivers and their 6th grade daughters participated in a weekend program that promotes empathy, communication skills, stress reduction, setting limits, honoring boundaries, and identifying relationship accountability.
Mansfield Art Center La Femme Artiste Society – Program serves girls 14-18 years of age. Each student will interact with local female scholars, educators, artists and community members as they explore creative ideas that promote a healthy female identity.
National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Positive Mentoring for Young Women in Transition – Program connects eight girls from juvenile court mentors to address personal care, nutrition, basic finances, responsibility, accountability, respectability, and the importance of each girl valuing herself as a productive and important person.
Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio Making Connections – Grant dollars support the purchase of Voice-over-Internet Protocol equipment to connect the Mansfield Planned Parenthood Center to the Customer Contact Center, which provides customer service, answers health-related questions, and schedules appointments.
Raemelton Therapeutic Equestrian Center Empower Program – Women and girls who have been victims of domestic violence will participate in a therapeutic riding program to help overcome the emotional and physical trauma they have sustained.
The Salvation Army Connect 4 Life – Pilot program helps mothers and their tweenage daughters (ages 10-13) learn how to strengthen and build a foundation for a life-long relationship in the areas of cooperation, confidence, communication, and conflict resolution.
