2011 Grant Awards

Connections Awards $5,710 for Programs that Support Youth

On Friday, January 20, the advisory committee of CONNECTIONS held its annual winter gala and grant awards ceremony at the Ohio State University - Mansfield in the Conard Arts Complex. The committee’s 2011 grant focus was on programs that support youth. Grants were awarded to the following organizations:

Big Brothers/Big Sisters - Bowling Fun Day
This program is designed as a one-day match for kids currently on the waiting list with those adults who have already "adopted" a child.  This program has been successful in helping the organization to recruit additional "Bigs" in the past.  There are approximately 60 kids on the waiting list.

Children's Cupboard Southside Outreach Center - "A New Me" Afterschool Enrichment
This after-school program is housed in the Hedges Education Building, and, while in collaboration with the Mansfield City Schools, no funding dollars are provided for this outreach.  Grant dollars would help to cover supplies and equipment for the program.

Discovery School - Camp Discovery: Eye on the Sky
This week-long event will allow students to participate in a multi-level unit, created and led by teacher-teams involving rigorous lessons based upon astronomy and space.

Ohio Bird Sanctuary - Junior Naturalist Program
This intensive, specialized, hands-on science program serves 17-20 young people ages 13-17 who have exhibited a strong interest in nature, the environment, and science. The Connections grant will cover the overnight experience of this project that allows the students to assist in removal of invasive insects.

Renaissance Performing Arts - Renaissance Youth Opera Theatre
Dedicated to preserving and promoting classic light opera and lyric musical theatre works, this program gives children the opportunity to experience and engage in all aspects of stagecraft, culminating in a live production.
