What is a Community Foundation

A community foundation is a tax-exempt public charity whose mission is to improve the quality of life in its community by supporting local charitable efforts. Community foundations fulfill donors’ charitable goals by awarding grants for special projects, capital campaigns, innovative programs, or to specific charities.

Typically, a community foundation is comprised of many separate charitable funds. Unlike private foundations, community foundation funds come from a combination of sources including individuals, families, corporations, and nonprofit agencies.

How does a community foundation differ from other charities?

Most charities have a specific program mission. Community foundations have a broad mission to serve the common good through grants to public charities. Most charities conduct annual fund drives, whereas a community foundation’s financial goal is to build an endowment to provide long-term community support.

"For good. For ever." through endowment

Community foundations are built on the concept of permanence. Endowed funds are created so the original gift remains intact but is invested to grow in value. While the fund continues to grow, a portion of the earnings can be granted to public charities. By creating an endowed fund, you can support your favorite charities and know that your gift will give forever.
